Alignment as a Strength Trait
The following is an excerpt from the second edition of Aristotle’s Alignment, reframing classic D&D nine-point alignment through the lens of The Nicomachean Ethics. It’s written with Principia Canonica in mind, but easily serves as a system-adaptable resource for those who want effective alignment-like mechanics in their campaigns. Strength turns alignment into force at the point where pressure rises and time tightens. The character doesn’t stop to reconsider their stance in that moment, because it’s already driving the response. Action comes forward with direction and commits without delay, which creates movement while others are still deciding what matters. That immediacy gives alignment weight, and that weight changes what happens next.
This strength shows up in commitment and follow-through. The pattern is already in place, so the decision doesn’t need to be rebuilt each time the situation sharpens. Action carries forward with confidence, and that confidence produces results that alter the field in real time. Momentum builds through use, and each use reinforces the pattern that made the action possible.
Each trait below expresses how alignment produces advantage through action. The phrasing ties the ethical position directly to behavior that can be taken immediately, keeping the focus on what happens at the table. The alignment mapping identifies the source of that strength, while the wording shows how it applies when decisions have to land.
Unyielding Moral Clarity: Principle drives action that commits the moment harm threatens others; maps to Lawful Good. Action moves to protect without delay, and that commitment holds even when the cost rises. A clear line is enforced, and people trust it because it never shifts under strain.
Reliance on Structure: Established systems guide action toward precise outcomes under pressure; maps to Lawful Neutral. The procedure directs the response step by step, and results follow from applying it exactly as intended. Stability holds because the structure is used without deviation.
Command Through Control: Authority asserts itself early and dictates how events proceed; maps to Lawful Evil. Orders land with weight and shape the response before resistance can form. Control tightens through each move, and outcomes align with whoever holds that control.
Pragmatic Compassion: Protection drives action that adapts to what the moment demands; maps to Neutral Good. Method changes as needed to secure a better outcome for others, and the response stays focused on what improves the situation. Care shows through action that solves the immediate problem.
Adaptive Balance: Response shifts position to keep forces in check as conditions change; maps to True Neutral. Action moves to counter whatever begins to dominate, and pressure evens out through that adjustment. The field stays steady because no single force is allowed to take hold.
Calculated Self-Interest: Opportunity is taken the instant it appears, with no wasted motion; maps to Neutral Evil. Action locks onto advantage and secures it before anyone else can respond. Each move strengthens the position and turns the moment toward personal gain.
Inspiring Defiance: Action breaks expectation in a way that others follow without hesitation; maps to Chaotic Good. A bold move opens a path, and people step into it because it works. Resistance forms through that example, and the situation changes direction.
Unpredictable Action: Movement arrives from an angle no one prepared for and forces immediate reaction; maps to Chaotic Neutral. Response forms without a pattern, and opposition fails to anchor against it. Control slips as each move resets what can be anticipated.
Weaponized Chaos: Disruption is driven into the moment until structure gives way; maps to Chaotic Evil. Action tears at stability wherever it appears, and pressure increases through that damage. Collapse spreads outward, and that breakdown creates space to act.
