Because It Was Flawed
Lately, we get asked why.
The answer is simple: because it was flawed.
Not one flaw, and not one single mistake that can be traced to any single moment. The problem appears when the structure snowballs and gathers weaknesses that can't be cleanly repaired. One issue appears, then begets another, and another, and another. Each one feels like it’s manageable in isolation. Each one can be repaired, with the hope that it’ll stabilize things and keep us moving forward.
The instinct is always to keep fixing problems as they appear. Whack-a-mole management. It feels responsible because the structure exists, so it’s maintenance. Repair seems easier than rebuilding from scratch, so a patch here, an adjustment there, and things keep moving. It even works for a while. Every fix solves the most visible problem, and that creates a belief that just one more repair will finally make everything solid.
Over time, the pattern changes. Patches accumulate, fixes begin interacting with one another in ways that weren't immediately obvious, and the repair that solved one problem quietly introduces new tension somewhere else. Another adjustment compensates for that, but creates a new problem in a different place. What began as well-intentioned maintenance gradually becomes the work. Instead of building something new, effort shifts to keeping a fragile machine from coming apart at the seams.
At a certain point, the real issue can’t be ignored. The problem isn't the latest crack. that appeared. It’s the structure itself at the root of the problem. Something needs to change, and it’s going to have to be something big, dramatic, expensive, and time-consuming. But it’s necessary, because things can’t continue the way they are.
Let’s use a boat and an analogy. When water comes leaking through the hull, the first instinct is to patch the leak and keep moving. If the vessel appears sound, the repair works. The voyage continues. But when the hull has deeper, structural weaknesses, the patches will never stop. Seal one seam, and the leak crops up somewhere else. Reinforce that joint, and a different one starts to strain. Every repair buys a little more time, but the underlying problem never goes away. If you’re willing to do it or not, the boat is going to sink at some point.
Eventually, the decision becomes obvious: Let it sink, and just get a new @#$%&! boat.
