Principia Minima

Narrative-First RPG System Overview

Principia Minima introduces the Principia Canonica narrative roleplaying system and the first principles that shape it. This booklet presents the system in its essential form, so you can see how narrative logic governs play and how consequence drives momentum at the table.

Roleplaying is story, and the rulebook exists to serve it. Players create events through decision and response, and the system exists to clarify how those decisions carry weight. Structure matters because it ensures that what happens next grows from what just happened. Choice produces consequence, which reshapes the situation, which generates new choices.

Characters begin with five types of traits: Archetype, Identity, Strength, Weakness, and Drive. You define what they are, and what they mean, instead of picking from a narrow, pre-defined list of options. Every character operates within the same framework, and each is unique because their traits anchor their actions to their motives and perspectives.

When a character acts, the gamemaster sets a pressure rating that reflects the weight of the moment. A quiet conversation carries less strain than a public accusation. A controlled landing differs from a desperate escape. Six-sided dice translate that pressure into a measurable outcome. Totals producing an outcome rating that influences what changes in the fiction.

The genre and setting of your game establish shared boundaries at the table. A 1940s noir investigation frames action differently than a deep-space exploration or an arcane fantasy world. Those parameters shape what character actions mean and what the weight of consequences might be. When the table agrees on tone, limits, and direction, the creative collaboration can remain focused and cohesive.

Principia Minima distills these ideas into a clear, usable overview. Five traits, pressure-based resolution, and consequence-driven interpretation create narrative movement across any genre. For those familiar with our work, this is our longstanding philosophy translated into play. For newcomers, it offers a direct path into the Principia Canonica system and the broader, ongoing projects it supports.
