11 April 2024: Future Plans
Feeling burnt out is a natural part of any creative endeavor, but it's also a sign that something needs to change. As a creator in the roleplaying niche, I've experienced my fair share of exhaustion and frustration. From dealing with misconceptions about mechanics to navigating toxic online debates, it can take a toll on both productivity and mental health.
For me, the tipping point came when I realized I was tired of constantly explaining why my projects, like Foragers Guild, diverged from the conventional Dungeons & Dragons terminology. Similarly, the misconception that DoubleZero is merely a James Bond clone became a tiresome narrative to counter. Engaging with trolls who argued in bad faith only added to the exhaustion, leaving me drained and disheartened.
I've realized that I need to prioritize my well-being and creative fulfillment over chasing after certain projects that no longer align with my goals. In the face of this burnout, I've made some decisions about the future of my work.
While I'll complete the DoubleZero Professions series and the Foragers Guild Factions series because I find joy and fulfillment in them, I've decided to step back from both of those lines for the time being.
The Lightspress Classics line, although enjoyable to work on, haven't garnered the sales or positive reception I had hoped for. As a result, I'll be taking a break from that line of content as well.
Similarly, Project Opera, while valuable in its insights, has served its purpose.
I’m putting an end to the staggered releases (Lightspress.com first, DriveThruRPG later) and opting for a simpler, more streamlined approach: everything, everywhere, on Tuesdays.
I'm also considering moving my blog to the front page of my website. Your feedback on this potential change is invaluable as I strive to create a more user-friendly experience for my audience.
Looking ahead, I've decided to reevaluate how I approach updating existing settings like those in DoubleZero and Foragers Guild. Rather than simply revising sourcebooks, I'm considering turning them into standalone games. This shift in perspective allows me to explore new creative avenues while still building upon the foundations I've already established.
Finding the balance between making a living, pursuing creative fulfillment, and avoiding unnecessary stress is crucial. It's a delicate equilibrium that I'm committed to achieving, even if it means stepping back from certain projects or changing my approach to content creation.
TLDR: while I may be taking a step back from certain projects for now, I'm not closing the door on them entirely. Instead, I'm focusing on what brings me joy and fulfillment while also prioritizing my mental well-being. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as I navigate this journey of self-discovery and creative renewal.
I hope you’re doing well today.
