Frequently Asked Questions

System and Compatibility

What system do your books use?

Most Lightspress titles use The Simple Approach, a narrative-first framework based on traits, emotional pacing, and consequence. It’s focused on story, not stats.

How do your tools work with other RPG systems?

Lightspress tools are modular. You can drop them into almost any system, fantasy, modern, horror, or use them on their own.

Is this beginner-friendly?

It can be, depending on how you think. The Simple Approach is designed for people with some experience, either with roleplaying, storytelling, or both. If you understand scenes, character arcs, and narrative pacing, you’ll find it easy to use.

Do I need a gamemaster to use this?

Yes. The system assumes someone is guiding the fiction, framing scenes, and presenting pressure. That role can rotate, but it’s part of how the system functions.

Character and Play

How does character creation work?

You define traits like archetype, identity, strength, weakness, and drive. These shape how the character behaves and what the story asks of them. You assign ratings using a small pool of points, nothing is randomized or rolled.

Where are the character sheets?

There aren’t any. Use a notebook, a blank page, or whatever helps you track tension and change. The system is designed to follow momentum, not forms.

What’s a trait?

A trait is anything that defines how a character acts under pressure. Traits are narrative tools, not stats. You name them. You decide how they shape scenes.

How do rolls and outcomes work?

You roll a number of six-sided dice equal to the trait’s rating. The gamemaster rolls a difficulty pool. Highest total wins. Every roll moves the fiction forward, no matter who succeeds.

What’s a hero point?

It’s a flexible player tool. You can spend one to reroll, power a trait you haven’t rated, or push for a meaningful shift. They’re earned through story pressure, spotlight moments, or emotional turns.

Can I run a campaign with this or is it just for one-shots?

Both. The Simple Approach works for short scenes or long arcs. It scales easily, especially when paired with faction traits, setting pressure, or character growth over time.

How much prep does this system require?

Very little. You don’t need stats or scripted events. Prep is about story tension, relationship pressure, and the emotional beats that matter.

Publishing and Use

Can I publish or sell content using your system?

No. Lightspress tools are for personal or table use only. Commercial licensing or adaptations are not available unless explicitly stated.

Design Philosophy

Why don’t your books include art?

They’re text-only by design. Art takes space and budget away from the actual tools. Every page is built for clarity, not ornament. The focus stays on story.

Are there safety tools or consent guidelines?

Yes. Every book includes a section on consent and collaborative boundaries. You’re expected to play with people who respect each other’s safety and trust.

Support and Contact

I emailed you and didn’t get a reply. Why?

Messages are checked during business hours. Replies are not guaranteed. We don’t respond to spam, vague questions, or anything already addressed in the rules. See the Contact page for more information.

Where can I ask questions about system mechanics?

Start with the books, they’re written to answer most questions directly. If something genuinely needs clarification or correction, email is an option. Just keep it clear and purposeful.

What about interviews, events, or media appearances?

Lightspress doesn’t participate in interviews, podcasts, livestreams, AMAs, or promotional appearances. It’s not about us, it’s about you.
