The Problem That Starts the Story

Part 5 of We Are All Storytellers

An instability is an active condition that can’t remain unchanged without creating consequences. Instability disrupts the narrative and forces the protagonist characters to respond through various means, including action, decision, avoidance, or sacrifice. As the characters react to instability, the story changes through the consequences that follow.

Examples of Instability

Below are some examples of the types of instability that could kick off a narrative.

Political Corruption: Public trust erodes when government officials are accused of unethical or illegal behavior during a critical election period.

Labor Unrest: Essential workers prepare to stop working to demand changes, creating uncertainty for the communities that depend on their services.

Economic Collapse: A business, industry, or source of income fails, leaving individuals, families, or entire communities struggling to adapt.

Public Health Emergency: Medical systems become overwhelmed by disease, disaster, or crisis, forcing difficult decisions about care and resources.

Loss of Public Trust: Confidence in institutions collapses after a controversial event, making cooperation, accountability, and social stability more difficult.

Infrastructure Failure: Aging or damaged systems can no longer reliably provide critical services such as electricity, transportation, or clean water.

Social Reintegration: People returning from military service, imprisonment, displacement, or other major life disruptions struggle to find a place in ordinary society.

Community Displacement: Powerful economic or political forces threaten to remove people from their homes, workplaces, or neighborhoods.

Resource Scarcity: Competition intensifies when food, housing, water, energy, or other necessities become difficult to obtain.

Institutional Breakdown: An organization responsible for maintaining order, safety, or public welfare becomes ineffective, corrupt, or unable to fulfill its responsibilities.
