I’m glad you’re here.
There’s always That One Guy. You know the one. The person who keeps showing up, not to connect, not to build, but to poke holes in things they don’t even understand. They’re not asking in good faith. They’re not even confused. They’re trying to catch you in something, to score a point that only they think matters.
Lightspress releases now go live a little later in the morning. Not because it makes things easier, but because That One Guy sends an email every single time a book appears on my site before it shows up on DriveThruRPG. It is never phrased like a helpful heads-up. It’s always tinged with accusation, as if he caught me making a mistake instead of watching the time zones roll over. I adjusted the schedule. Not for him. For me. So I wouldn’t have to deal with him again.
I stopped offering preorders because of That One Guy who didn’t understand how preorders worked. I canceled a whole crowdfunding campaign because That One Guy (this time, a woman) accused the print-on-demand model of being a scam. There will always be That One Guy. The one who emails the same question five times expecting a different answer. The one who wants to debate the refund policy you’ve already honored. The one who orders a box of apples and acts surprised they’re not a bag of oranges. The one who assumes you’re lying, scamming, screwing it up, because they want to feel clever.
For a long time, I worried that setting boundaries would scare away thoughtful readers. But I’ve realized that good people don’t take it personally when you don’t want to waste your time. Only That One Guy does.
