Non-humanoid perspectives in fantasy roleplaying scenarios.

$1.50

In this essay, I want to address a subject of significance within fantasy roleplaying: the exploration of non-humanoid perspectives. In our tradition of storytelling, it's common to center our adventures around humans and humanoids — elves, dwarves, orcs, and so on — while other types of sentient beings find themselves relegated to the sidelines.

I submit that there is value in expanding our horizons to encompass the viewpoints of creatures beyond the familiar archetypes. This project isn't merely a pursuit of novelty but rather a deliberate effort to enrich our storytelling and elevate our roleplaying experiences.

By venturing beyond the confines of humanoid player characters, we unlock opportunities for character development, worldbuilding, and narrative complexity. The exploration of non-humanoid perspectives allows us to examine cultures, histories, and psyches that diverge from the human norm, broadening our understanding of sentient life within our fictional worlds.

This exploration is a catalyst for introspection, prompting us to contemplate our own humanity through the lens of the Other. By immersing ourselves in the minds of creatures with alternative modes of perception and interaction, we can gain insights into the fundamental elements of existence, fostering empathy and intellectual growth in the process.

The pursuit of non-humanoid perspectives scenarios isn't merely a creative exercise but a project with the potential to deepen our appreciation for the complexities of sentient life and the possibilities of storytelling. I invite you to join me in embracing this project as we begin a journey of exploration and discovery beyond the humanoid.

Lux Adversaria is a series of informal essays where I examine different elements of tabletop roleplaying. "Adversaria" refers to "miscellaneous writings" in Latin, representing my personal collections of notes and reflections. The term "lux adversaria" roughly translates to "light of adversity," reflecting my exploration of challenges and difficult topics.
