Narrative Action
Part 6 of We Are All Storytellers
An action is something that a character deliberately says, attempts, or does in response to an instability or event within the story. Actions influence events by creating consequences, increasing or decreasing pressure, revealing information, or changing the relationships between characters, interested forces, and factions.
Examples of Actions
Below are some examples of actions a character could take. There’s no finite list or limitation, beyond what the player wants and what the established setting makes possible.
Building Trust: A character works to establish a positive relationship with individuals or groups who are suspicious, hostile, or reluctant to cooperate.
Investigating a Problem: A character gathers information, examines evidence, and searches for answers to understand a situation better.
Escaping Confinement: A character attempts to free themselves from physical, social, legal, or political restrictions that limit their choices.
Supporting Others: A character provides encouragement, leadership, care, or practical assistance to help other people endure difficult circumstances.
Preserving Culture: A character records, protects, teaches, or shares traditions, knowledge, beliefs, or history that might otherwise be lost.
Creating Resources: A character builds, repairs, invents, or organizes something needed to address a challenge or improve conditions.
Resolving a Dilemma: A character confronts a difficult decision involving competing values, responsibilities, loyalties, or beliefs.
Negotiating an Agreement: A character works to find common ground between individuals or groups with different goals, interests, or demands.
Protecting Others: A character takes action to defend people, places, resources, or institutions from threats or harm.
Challenging Authority: A character resists, questions, or attempts to change a person, policy, organization, or system they believe is causing problems.
