Lessons Learned Writing Lux Adversaria

The purpose of the Lux Adversaria series is to share insights I’ve gathered over [cough] decades. While revisiting old notes, articles, and blog posts, as well as perusing binders filled with ideas, I stumbled upon some new epiphanies, or perhaps rediscovered truths I had previously overlooked.

Writing these essays has underscored the importance of embracing vulnerability as a writer. There are aspects I've never shared before, dismissing them as cringe-worthy in the past. Yet now, upon reflection, I realize they contain valuable insights, even if I hadn't effectively communicated them at the time.

There are still boundaries I'm not willing to cross and things I’m not going to discuss. In a polarized roleplaying community, as in the broader world, I'm cautious of becoming the target of some ideologue's aimless crusade to find offense where none exists.

This introspection has prompted me to reflect on my motives and methods, not only in terms of the content I create and publish but also in how I market and present it to the world. This, perhaps, is the most significant takeaway. It's easy to become entrenched in a particular approach, and no longer learn or analyze what you’re doing. Regularly reassessing oneself, one's work, and one's practices is the breath of life.

I hope you're doing well today.

Lux Adversaria is a series of informal essays where I delve into different aspects of tabletop roleplaying. "Adversaria" refers to "miscellaneous writings" in Latin, representing my personal collections of notes and reflections. The term "lux adversaria" roughly translates to "light of adversity," reflecting my exploration of challenges and difficult topics.

Lightspress believes in keeping roleplaying simple, focusing on useful content rather than flashy presentation. After all, the real magic of roleplaying happens around the table, where creativity and collaboration thrive, not in a book. Visit Lightspress.com to learn more.
