The land has stopped behaving as it should; crops surge and fail with no discernible pattern, animals avoid sections of the fields, and no one agrees on what they’re seeing from one day to the next. The local authorities insist that everything is stable, even as they tighten their control over essential supplies and restrict movement. It’s increasingly harder to leave as more people decide that they need to. What used to hold the settlement together begins to slip, and every choice carries increasing weight. Whether someone decides to keep working, refuses to carry on, or attempts to get out before the land changes them, too, is where the consequences happen.
