Dice & Discontent: RPGaDay2024
Dice & Discontent isn’t your average roleplaying zine, and I like it that way. Sure, it might not have the gritty, DIY aesthetic of a true punk rock zine, but don’t be fooled by the clean packaging. What’s inside is a no-holds-barred take on the roleplaying world, a place where I’m not afraid to call out the bullshit and question the sacred cows that some people still worship like they’re untouchable.
This issue, though, is a little different. It’s a compilation of blog posts I wrote for #RPGaDay2024, which means I had to play it a bit safer than usual. These posts were published on the Lightspress website, so the swearing is toned down, the snark is more subtle, and the overall vibe is a bit more “professional.” But trust me, if you read between the lines, you’ll still catch glimpses of the real me—the one who’s fed up with the gatekeeping, the outdated rules, and the nonsense that still gets a pass in certain corners of the hobby.
As you go through these pages, look out for the moments where my frustration starts to show. If you sense a bit of sarcasm or a hint of disdain, that’s me trying to keep my true feelings under wraps for the sake of the audience. But make no mistake, underneath that polished exterior, I’m still rolling my eyes at the stuff that doesn’t hold up, and I’m more than ready to tear it apart.
Dice & Discontent is about cutting through the crap and getting to the heart of what really matters in roleplaying. It’s about challenging the status quo, questioning the old ways, and not being afraid to ruffle a few feathers along the way. So, as you read this issue, remember that every time I sound like I’m just “going along with it,” there’s a part of me that’s itching to say, “Really? We’re still doing this?”
The bottom line is, this zine is a space where I can speak my mind, even if I have to tone it down now and then. The next time, though, you might just get the full, unfiltered version—no holding back. For now, enjoy this collection of posts, knowing that the real fire is just beneath the surface, ready to blaze through when the time is right.
